Lacrosse Basics

Welcome to the sport of Lacrosse - the "fastest sport on two feet" and the fastest growing sport in America!  If you are a parent (or player) new to Lacrosse then this is a great place to begin the journey.  This section of the IYL website contains numerous links to the Wikipedia that you can dip into for more information - use your browser's "back to" button to return to this site.

So what is Lacrosse?  Let's start with the Wikipedia definition and then take a closer look at the sport's origins and how it is played today -

Lacrosse is a team sport of Native American origin that is played using a small solid rubber ball and a long-handled racquet called a crosse or lacrosse stick. The head of the lacrosse stick is strung with loose netting that is designed to hold the lacrosse ball. Offensively, the object of the game is to use the lacrosse stick to catch, carry, and pass the ball in an effort to score by ultimately hurling the ball into an opponent's goal. Defensively the object is to keep the opposing team from scoring and to dispossess them of the ball through the use of stick checking and body contact or positioning. There are three main versions of the sport; men's lacrosse, women's lacrosse and box lacrosse.

There are three primary types of Lacrosse played in Washington:  Mens, Womens, and with the addition of the NLL Washington Stealth - Box.  IYL laxers are also happily familiar with a very cool version called Chumash or 3v3 Lacrosse showcased each year in the annual IYL Sammamish Shoot-Out.
